IPhone Not Charging but Turns on When Plugged In
Is it a problem with the software?
If your iPhone isn't charging when it's plugged in, you might immediately suspect a problem with the battery. However, the chances are better that a software glitch is to blame. Consider the implications of this: while the hardware performs the heavy work, the software is the brains of the operation, and as a more delicate system, it is more likely to experience a tiny malfunction here and there.
The Solution: a System Reset (Hard Reset).
If your iPhone 8 or iPhone X isn't charging while it's plugged in, try the following:
Press and hold the volume up button for a few seconds before releasing it. Repeat the process with the volume down button.
Press and hold the side button/power button (also known as the sleep/wake button) for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears on the display screen. It is possible that you will have to hold it for a long period of time – up to 15-30 seconds. Please don't give up, and keep your finger on the trigger.
Release your grip as soon as the Apple logo appears. In a few seconds, your iPhone will be restored to its original state.
If you have an iPhone 6, 6S, or iPhone 7, you can do the following:
Press and hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears on the screen of your device.
After doing a factory reset on any model, plug your phone in for 30 minutes to an hour to test if it reacts to the reset command.
Hardware-based Alternatives
While there are more software solutions available, if a hard reset does not resolve the issue, the following actions should be tried first.
Examine your lightning cable for signs of damage.
The fact that your iPhone won't charge has a lot to do with the connection itself. If your lightning cable is anything like mine, it gets a lot of use as you go about your daily routine. Although it may not be visible to the human eye, it is possible that your cable is damaged on the inside – especially if the cable is from a third-party manufacturer. Replace it and see if it makes a difference.
Chargers should be swapped.
The same as with the lightning cord, try using an alternative charger to see if it makes a different difference. The problem can often be traced back to the cable or charger, depending on the circumstances.
Ports of Interchange
Again, just to make sure you've covered all of the obvious possibilities, make sure the problem isn't with the port on your computer or the outlet in the wall. It may seem insignificant, but switching outlets is preferable to kicking yourself later after performing a system restore.
